Awareness of adult literacy

Research undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in 2006 revealed that a staggering 46% of Australians aged between 15 and 74 struggle with everyday literacy needs.

These results have been included in the wider International Literacy Survey that involved many OECD countries.

Issues in adult literacy

The need to tackle the sense of shame that surrounds illiteracy and to shift negative perceptions so that literacy is seen as just another life-skill that can be learnt throughout life.
