Historic Moment for the Community Adult Literacy Foundation
History was made on Saturday June 19, 2004 when Lotterywest presented the Community Adult Literacy Foundation (CALF) with a cheque for $100,000 toward the support of adult literacy in Western Australia.
Mr Norm Marlborough MLA made the presentation to the Foundation's then President, Mrs Ruth Long. The Foundation is an initiative of Read Write Now! volunteer Coordinators who oversee groups of volunteer tutors and adult students across the state. The $100,000 will go toward giving each of the 23 Read Write Now! regions access to greater resources.
The presentation was also attended by the now Managing Director of Central Institute of Technology Mr Neil Fernandes and Mr Jim Thompson, former President of the Australian Council of Adult Literacy. Mr Thompson acknowledged the important role of the literacy volunteers and said that without doubt the Read Write Now! organisation was the best of its kind in Australia.
